The Detroit No. 1 Club is the first Kiwanis Club in the world (there are now over 8,000)! It was founded in downtown Detroit by a group of business men, led by Allan Brown. The Detroit No. 1 Club is the first Kiwanis Club in the world (there are now over 8,000)! It was founded in downtown Detroit by a group of business men, led by Allan Brown. The first man to sign up was Joseph Prance, a tailor who had a shop on Gratiot Avenue. The official founding date is January 21, 1915. The Club meets at noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The luncheon meeting ends no later than 1:30pm and is held at the Detroit Athletic Club, 241 Madison, in downtown Detroit. We support and engage in a number of community outreach projects, including providing books for kids, volunteering with local community organizations and a variety of community-building activities. Men and women who want to give of themselves in service to others are invited to join our Club. Membership provides an excellent opportunity to meet other business and community leaders and to enjoy fun, fellowship and helping others!
